Comets v Luton (League)

Comets 2 - 1 Luton

Spectacular late Abi winner steals all three points for the Mighty Comets. First game back saw some surprisingly good football from the Mighty Comets.

Was really pleased with our defensive organisation, and (particularly in the second half) our simple but very effective passing game. Once we get the triangles going we really do look like a lovely football team. A bit of give-and-go goes a long way. Special thanks to Shona and Georgia for SPECTACULAR performances in goal including a cat-like reflex save from Sho and a one-on-one headlong save with her FACE from Georgia.

Was wonderful to welcome Sal back to the fold after over a year out with ankle and shoulder injuries. An assured and confident performance was a pleasure to see. A strike force of Sonal and Sal took me back to my first year with the Comets. When Sonal played number 9 and Sal just behind her in the hole. The fact that you are both delivering performances like that 10 years later is wonderful to see.

So we matched Luton throughout, we looked more fluid in the second half, and we were very unlucky to go 1-0 down around the hour mark to a freak defensive mix up. Somewhat against the run of play at that point but our heads didnít go down and we swiftly responded with a spectacular Ambrose finish. She ran in behind with perfect timing to meet the chipped assist then smashed it past the goalie from close range.

Then in the 87th minute Abi the overlapping full back cut inside from the left flank, looked to shape a cross but the space opened up in front of her so she took an extra touch and then smashed it from outside the box into the top corner through the goalieís flailing hands.

We maintained excellent defensive shape for the last 5 minutes, entirely negating Lutonís desperate shift to three up front. A sweet and much needed victory
