Sunday 24th March

Comets v Battersea Ironsides (Russell Cup quarter final)

An adventurous morning ...

First, Battersea was waterlogged but we were able to relocate to Clapham Common. Second, Sam was sick and third, I had to find the ref and get him to Clapham too. Amazingly we kicked off only 30 mins late thanks to a smashing team effort (oppo drove us to the pitch then comets did a fantastic job of getting the nets up).

The 0-0 result reflected a dogged if inglorious performance. We were under the cosh in the first half but survived the ironsides, the wind and the slope to go in at half time without conceding.

We brought anna on at half time and leanne with half an hour to go and they linked well with Nic and Krystle to deliver more attacking threat. Ofoego had the ball in the net soon after but was eventually ajudged offside after it seemed initially he had given the goal.

Leanne blasted into the side netting after a strong run and we tested the keeper a couple more times but they still looked dangerous on the break (especially given mcgrumpy's aggressive move to 4-4-2 after only any hour had been played). Our back line of ash, rollo, georgia, sash and then sal deserve tremendous credit today for restricting their shots almost completely. Ash and Georgia take the Woman of the Match awards.

By mutual agreement we went straight to penalties after the 90 mins had ended 0-0.

  1. Sal scored, they scored
  2. Abi's was saved, theirs was saved
  3. Krystle scored, they scored
  4. Marella scored, theirs was saved

Making it 3-2. Rollo needed to score the 5th penalty to win the game. Slotted it in the corner, no messing.

Comets win and through to the semi-finals.
