Heading onto the field with the 3 C's and a Shona grrrr, Comets nonetheless took their usual 15 minutes to wake up. The defence was solid though and soaked up the pressure without Joybabe troubling Nikki too much (which allowed her time to do plenty of shouting and keep us all on our toes!!) Gradually, Ashley and Fiona got control of the midfield with excellent commitment closing down their players quickly and some lovely dribbles and neat passing. Finally, Sonal, who had the beating of their defenders all game, found some space down the left and crossed in a lovely ball which was met by Nic with an excellent shot to leave their keeper standing! 1-0 to the Comets. Sonal got a second from a good run and some nice interplay with Lisa and Comets went into half time feeling confident at 2-0 up.
Joybabe came out strong at the start of the second half and capitalised on my ankle going to create an opening down the right hand side and pulled one back. Fortunately, just as they thought they were going to make a comeback, Sonal raced down the left and I managed to play a neat pass to put Sonal through on goal and there was no mistake from Trigger ... 3-1 to the Comets. Sho came on to add fresh legs to the left wing and for much of the second half it was a real cup battle with some solid tackles flying around and more than one player grimacing on the floor. Tiring Comets let one in from a goal mouth scramble but we were unlucky to be denied a fourth with both Lisa and Sonal going close. At the final whistle is was 3-2 to the Comets. Roll on the quarter finals!
Woman of the match was a tough call. with Ashley in particular deserving of a mention but WOM went to Sonal for scoring two, creating one and generally being an all round menace to their defence!
